About

My name is Kendrick Weingast (she/her/hers), and I am an artistic creator, theatrical director, and creative educator hailing from the Washington D.C. area.

Growing up, I found a love for theatre by watching old VHS tapes of musicals such as Donny Osmund’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolored Dreamcoat on my grandmother’s living room floor.

I moved to Allentown, Pennsylvania to develop my artistic skill at Muhlenberg College, where I started learning circus arts and delved into the world of directing short-form and devised works. In 2019 I spent my spring semester learning Commedia dell’Arte and studying movement, devising, and vocal techniques at the Accademia dell’Arte in Arezzo, Italy.

After graduating from Muhlenberg College in 2020, I delved further into my education, becoming a member of the 2020 cohort of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Arts Directing Intensive where I was inspired to start my own theatre company, First Kiss Theatre, alongside my collaborator and friend, Ellie Strayer. Through this virtual theatre company, we raised hundreds of dollars for several charities and created a platform for early-career artists to create and stay active in the field that was undergoing intense transformation.

In 2021, I moved to Vermont to work at Northern Stage as their Education Fellow, where I spent a full year inside the Education Department, honing my administrative skills while having the unique opportunity to observe theatre professionals up close. I had the opportunity to emulate the skills I learned from them, as I directed my own adaptation of Richard III alongside Robert David Grant with thirteen high schoolers. Through my work at Northern Stage, I worked alongside the Education team to successfully pull off a fantastic year with its Boot Camp Company, YES (Youth Ensemble Studio) and YES Jr. teams, and BridgeUp: Theater in Schools initiatives.

The summer of 2022 brought me to Connecticut, as I directed Aladdin Kids with Open Arts Alliance. I had such a fun time I stuck around the Nutmeg State, serving as one of the National Theatre Insititute Fellows at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center. Through my work with NTI, I have served nearly fifty students in four programs over two semesters, as they navigated the immersive and intensive theatre creation program. In this administrative role, I served as primary communicator between faculty, staff, and student, while also taking classes and developing my personal artistic projects.

This summer, I am excited to be directing Green Day’s American Idiot with McLean Community Players at the Alden Theater in McClean, Virginia!

ARTIST STATEMENT

The work that inspires me often finds its roots in classic mythology and stories that get brought to new audiences through new interpretations and lenses. As a director, I enjoy showing moments of intimacy in uncommon ways and without relying on the use of physical touch. As an educator, my philosophy lies in creating opportunity through equitable practices and prioritizing the idea that everyone is an artist. I enjoy meeting collaborators and students where they are at and developing alongside them.
